CUIN 6320 Portfolio

Biography: I have been teaching in Spring Branch Independent School District for five years.  Four of those have been spent working with all learning levels of 8th grade and one year with wonderful 6th grade.  I recived my alternative certification through ACT Houston in 2004.  I currently reside in Houston, TX and am completing my Master's degree in Reading and Language Arts Education and am hoping to begin my doctoral work soon.

Goal Statement: While I adore working with younger students, my ultimate goal (years from now) is to teach at the collegiate level.  There are many steps that I must take between now and then and am so fortunate to be gaining experience in a wonderful school with wonderful students.

Teaching Philosophy: I believe every child can learn, just not in the same way.  As a teacher, I stive to meet my students where they are.  There are as many learning styles and there are kids, and it's my job to figure out what works for each of them and do it.  I believe if students have ownership of their learning, they will be more successful.  In order to give them this, I give options of choosing how they learn, as well as an expectation.  I will never, as long as I am supported by administration, mandate how my students learn.  There are always going to be requirements, but how they get there is up to them, as long as they do get there.
